About the former Seattle Midwifery School

The former Seattle Midwifery School (SMS) lives on as the Department of Midwifery and Simkin Center for Allied Birth Vocations! It has been our mission to educate and inspire leaders in childbirth professions. We strive for a world where every family has access to care, education and options, contributing to a safe and joyous pregnancy, birth and postpartum. We are also happy to be a part of the Bastyr mission to “educate future leaders in the natural health arts and sciences. Respecting the healing power of nature and recognizing that body, mind and spirit are intrinsically inseparable, we model an integrated approach to education, research and clinical service. “

The School offers training for women's health-care providers that values pregnancy and birth as normal and healthy processes, honors women's ways of knowing, respects the needs of adult learners, and promotes personal and professional development.

Beyond our role in education, the Department of Midwifery and Simkin Center promotes national and regional advocacy for midwives and doulas. Throughout the years, (the former) SMS staff, faculty, students, and alumnae have played a pivotal role in the development of local and national professional organizations and public policies that support midwives and doulas.

Seattle Midwifery School will now be a part of a much larger health education institution as we enter a fourth decade of educating childbirth professionals. Together with our new colleagues at Bastyr University, we are committed to bringing together the students, curriculum, and technology necessary to help change the face of maternity care. We will continue: educating the highest caliber birth professionals, advocating for midwives and doulas in our health-care system, and empowering women and families through informed choice and the continued creation of meaningful alternatives in maternity care.
