Project Coordinator and Consultant Team Biographies
Kelsey Tanaka, Project Coordinator
A recent graduate of Scripps College, Kelsey holds a BA in Politics and International Relations with an emphasis in Critical Race Theory. Her interest in community work and empowerment has lead her to her involvement on various projects including research around issues of gentrification in LA’s Little Tokyo and the role of universal healthcare in the health of Nicaraguan immigrants in Costa Rica. Following graduation, Kelsey worked as a community organizer in Los Angeles organizing around affordable, clean fuel public transportation for low income communities of color.
Consultant Team:
Benita R. Horn
Benita is an organizational development consultant who primarily works with organizations in creating and sustaining systems that support social justice and capacity building. The work we're doing with Bastyr University Department of Midwifery and Simkin Center is exciting to me because it is focused on systems, engaging all stakeholders and creating a foundation for sustaining equity.
Margo Adair
Margo has been doing training and consulting work on issues of inclusion, justice and race for over 25 years. Her approach enables people to place their own experiences in larger cultural and historical contexts. She founded Tools for Change in 1985 to promote social justice, healing, leadership development and inclusive organizations in which everyone can contribute their best. (www.toolsforchange.org)
Mayet Dahlila
Mayet is a Community Organizer and co/founder and one of four partners of Intra-Afrikan Konnection (IAK), an innovative and community based business specializing in organizational and individual development. She is really enjoying the journey of raising her young son Olu with in the loving family, extended family and village environment that encircles them. Mayet believes and has experienced that by coming and working together social change can and will happen.
Sheila Capestany
Sheila is Executive Director of Open Arms Perinatal Services. She has a private consulting business as well and has provided training and consulting work on cultural versality, equity and conflict resolution for 17 years. Sheila was trained as a doula in 1990 at SMS and is excited to be a part of this work now, as a part of her continuing commitment to ensuring that high quality birth experiences are available to all women.
