INTRODUCTION

This site compiles information on Continuing Education Resources that may help midwives, midwifery students, childbirth educators, and other professionals in related fields locate educational opportunities. It focuses on resources that are available online or that are available in the Seattle area.

The content of these courses has not been evaluated by SMS for quality or relevance.

Criteria for Selecting Web Sites
  • Clear attribution of course sponsors.
  • Sponsorship by accredited universities or accreditation by MEAC, NCCCA, ANCC, AMA, or ACCME.
  • Course catalogues or lists viewable free of charge.
  • Inclusion of content applicable to midwifery or perinatal practice.
  • Site content reasonably easily browsed or searched.
  • Content not exclusively sponsored by commercial pharmaceuticals.

JOURNAL ARTICLES


  • Nursing Center CE Tests
    Lippincott Williams and Wilkins
    An excellent site. Search for full-text articles by keyword. Read article then take CEU exam. Articles come from journals such as American Journal of Nursing, American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing, AWHONN Lifelines, JOGNN. Viewing articles is free. Accreditation: American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. Fees for tests range from $15-$20.

    American Nurses Credentialing Center approved CME online courses. Fees range from $0 to $15 and are sponsored by such organizations as CDC, Maternal Child Health Bureau, and American Nursing Association.

    ArcMesa Educators is an ACCME, ADA CERP, AGD, ANCC nationally approved provider for physicians, physician assistants, dentists, nurses, and radiological technologists. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for Physicians. Electronic continuing education for many types of health professionals. More than 50 full-text primary care articles. Topics are drawn from the most common disorders and popular health issues, especially nutrition, but a few address practice and risk management issues. Registration and course review is free. Credits cost $7 - $33.

  • Association of Reproductive Health Professionals
    AMA approved CME courses. Current modules include contraceptive choice, perimenopause, oral contraception, and HIV infections in women. $15 per credit.

  • Virtual Lecture Hall
    Continuing medical education courses by specialty. Primarily focused on diseases, such as cancer. However, also includes practice management issues and social issues such as domestic violence. Most courses sponsored by universities. Free registration is required. Course fees range from $4 to $35.

    This site links to a variety of accredited sponsors. Allows browsing by topic area. The site is relatively new. Its stated mission is to become a comprehensive gateway for online continuing education resources. Planned future additions include business management courses. Fees vary depending on sponsors.   • University of Washington Online CME Courses
    Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. An annual fee of $50 is required for purchase of a password that entitles subscriber to unlimited courses for that year. Most courses are not relevant to midwifery. Older courses may be viewed online without password.

  • CME Web
    American Health Consultants is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide CME for physicians. Site includes many OB/GYN courses, most of them not relevant to midwifery practice. This is part of PDR.net (Medical Economics). Each course is $15.

  • Medscape CME Center
    Medscape offers both free and fee-based continuing education activities. The free programs are learning modules developed by Medscape under unrestricted educational grants and accredited by an approved sponsor. The fee-based program is available on select medical journal articles developed by Medscape and other publishers and accredited by an ACCME approved sponsor. The annual fee for the CME subscription is $50. Browsable by specialty. Most courses not relevant to midwifery.

Self-directed monographs designed to help perinatal nurses integrate the latest scientific and clinical advances into delivery of care for mothers and babies. Knowledge and clinical applications gained from these modules apply to the practice of care throughout the perinatal continuum.

The March of Dimes has provider status for continuing education credit for registered nurses through the New York State Nurses Association, which is accredited by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, and through the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP-11444. Additionally, several modules are approved for continuing education units (CEUs) for certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Formats include conferences, continuing education seminars, and clinical experience programs with PPWW clinical preceptors. Web site does not list courses. A phone call to obtain schedule may be necessary.

    CME information on more than 2,000 medical conferences, searchable and indexed by medical specialty, location, and date. The site is sponsored by Educational Database Resources. Conference sponsors vary, as do fees. This site also includes a limited number of online courses, all sponsored by Cleveland Clinic Foundation and CD ROMS.

  • Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO)
    The ALSO course from the American Academy of Family Physicians is designed to assist health care professionals in developing and maintaining the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage the emergencies which arise in obstetrics.

    The course includes required syllabus reading, lectures, and hands-on workstations. Evaluation is by a written, objective exam on content and by skills-assessment stations.

    The ALSO course is primarily for maternity care providers, including physicians, nurse midwives, registered nurses, and other clinicians practicing in many different settings, who could profit from the cognitive and procedural review provided by the course.
