The Collection

Books
The Library owns approximately 1,600 books. Our holdings include current as well as archival editions of textbooks; works on the history, sociology, and politics of midwifery; works on midwifery and doula practice; and books for childbirth educators and consumers.

Books are shelved according to the Library of Congress classification scheme.

Videos
The SMS video collection includes approximately 200 video tapes and DVDs on childbirth, the history of midwifery, clinical procedures and skills, and social and health issues related to the perinatal period.

Videos and DVDs are housed on a separate shelf in the library, and are arranged alphabetically by title.

Journals
Journals are not available for loan. Copies of articles may be made on site for 10 cents per page. Journals are shelved alphabetically by title.

Audiocassettes
Audiocassettes are housed in a file cabinet in the library and are arranged alphabetically by producer.  They are not cataloged.

Senior Papers
A research paper is required of each SMS student as a condition of graduation.  These papers include extensive literature reviews on issues of current significance.

Senior papers are housed in marked file cabinets in the library. They are arranged by broad topic categories: Antepartum, Intrapartum, Postpartum, Neonatal, Gynecology/Family Planning, Psycho/Social/Sexual, and Professional Issues. Within each topic, the papers are filed alphabetically by author’s last name.

Vertical file
The Vertical File includes reprints, journal and newspaper articles, pamphlets, newsletters, and miscellaneous items. This file is arranged by subjects which can be viewed on the library web site or in printed form in the library. This material is not cataloged and cannot be borrowed. Copies can be made for 10 cents per page.

Databases
Public access to the National Library of Medicine databases, including PubMed, is available at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/.
