Admissions
Seattle Midwifery School welcomes a new class of student midwives once each year in September. Applications are due by February 1 of each year. If you're ready to apply, follow the instructions on the "How to Apply"page of the web site or in the catalog.
UPDATE: This year’s application deadline has been extended to March 1, 2010.
Interviews
Applicants must be available for a personal interview and an Admissions Day in Seattle, Washington, during March or April. Late applicants may be interviewed later in the spring if there is space available. Applicants who are interviewed will have an opportunity to ask questions of SMS staff, learn what can be expected as a student at SMS, receive an orientation to the midwifery profession, sit in on a class, and have lunch with currently enrolled students.
Foreign Students
Non-US citizens should contact the school for more information before applying. SMS is approved by the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to accept foreign students. All foreign students must demonstrate proof of financial ability to cover their education and expenses while in the US in order to be approved to cross the border to attend classes. Foreign students cannot work in the US on a student visa. For detailed information relating to Canadian applicants, click here.
Criteria for Selection
Applicants must meet the prerequisites and complete the application process described on the How to Apply page. SMS evaluates applicants according to their previous education, life experience, and personal qualities.
Priority is given to applicants who:
- are from racial, cultural and geographic communities in which there is a shortage of midwifery services
- demonstrate a commitment to building midwifery as a profession
- have relationships with practitioners who are willing to be preceptors
