Admissions
Bastyr University welcomes a new class of student midwives each Fall. Applications are due by February 1st of each year. If you're ready to apply, please follow the instructions on the “How to Apply” page.
Interviews
Applicants must be available for a personal interview and an Admissions Day in the Seattle, Washington area, during March or April. Late applicants may be interviewed later in the spring if there is space available. Applicants who are interviewed will have an opportunity to ask questions of the Department of Midwifery faculty and staff, learn what can be expected as a student in the midwifery program, receive an orientation to the midwifery profession, sit in on a class, and have lunch with currently enrolled students.
International Applicants
Bastyr University welcomes international applicants for enrollment as full-time, degree-seeking students. International applicants should request a packet from the Office of Admissions that includes full details about the application and admissions process. All international applicants are required to submit an application, application fee, letters of recommendation, documentation of sufficient funds, official transcripts, and (where applicable) test of English as a foreign language scores (TOEFL, Bastyr Code #9839).
Transcripts from any college or university outside the U.S. or Canada must be translated and evaluated, course-by-course, by an independent evaluation service.
Please visit the Bastyr Admissions page for International Students to learn more about being an International Student at Bastyr.
Criteria for Selection
Applicants must meet the prerequisites and complete the application process described on the How to Apply page. The Department of Midwifery evaluates applicants according to their previous education, life experience, and personal qualities.
Priority is given to applicants who:
- are academically strong (3.0 or above, especially in the prerequisite courses)
- are from racial, cultural and geographic communities in which there is a shortage of midwifery services
- demonstrate a commitment to building midwifery as a profession
- have relationships with practitioners who are willing to be preceptors
How do I make my application stronger?
We are finding that each year our program becomes more competitive – more people apply than we have spaces in the class. Although we do look at the application holistically, we find that in general, competitive applicants have all or most of the following:
- As or Bs in the prerequisite courses
- Taken the doula training earlier in the admissions year and have attended a few births as a doula or midwife’s assistant
- A carefully written and edited application essay
- A plan for both personal and financial support during the midwifery program
- A clear understanding of our low-residency program and how online learning works
- A clear understanding of direct-entry midwifery
- Knowledge of how midwifery is practiced in the community they wish to work
If you have any questions about any of the following, please contact the admissions advisor for the midwifery program at mwadvise@bastyr.edu.
