Information for Canadian Applicants

As you may know, midwifery education is going through some changes throughout Canada. We would like to be supportive of our Canadian students and prospective students by providing you with the resources to do your own research about becoming registered in your province, however, ultimately it is your responsibility to keep informed about these changes. It seems that all of Canada may adopt the Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Pilot (MMBP) that is now in effect in B.C., but these changes have not been made on a federal level. If you are from a province other than B.C., please be knowledgeable of your own provincial rules, but also realize that your province may adopt similar guidelines as the B.C. model.

For more information, please visit the Canadian Association of Midwives, www.canadianmidwives.org.

British Columbia
We are proud of the many SMS graduates who are practicing Registered Midwives (RMs) in British Columbia. SMS is approved for provincial and national student financial aid. Recently the PLEA process has been replaced by the Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Pilot (MMBP), “a 7-month pilot project that will help internationally-educated midwives learn how to apply their skills in a Canadian context.”  The MMBP is a mechanism for midwifery registration in Canada and they do not approve any school programs.  The SMS Midwifery Education Program does meet the educational requirements for application to the MMBP but Canadian students are advised to stay abreast of developments in this registration process.

For more information please visit the following sites:

Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Pilot (MMBP) Website www.midwiferybridging.ca

Canadian Midwifery Regulators Consortium Website www.cmrc-ccosf.ca.

Other Provinces
SMS graduates can also be found practicing in Alberta and Ontario. Like British Columbia, SMS qualifies for Canadian financial aid in other provinces and the MMBP is the path for SMS graduates to gain registration in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC and the Northwest Territories project in this pilot year (2008/09).  You can learn specific details about each province from the Canadian Association of Midwives.
