Low-residency model
One of the most exciting aspects of our program is its low-residency model. This hybrid delivery
system allows students to remain in their communities and commute to onsites at the Bastyr campus
three times each quarter. When not physically on campus, students use the Internet classroom to
correspond with classmates and instructors, participate in discussions, complete homework, and take tests.
Each cohort of students attends the same onsite weeks together, which allows for the face-to-face learning
experience that is vital to midwifery training and allows students to build strong relationships with
classmates and faculty. These weeks are planned more than a year in advance. Onsite days begin as early
as 8 AM and may extend until 9:30 PM.
When not attending classes onsite, students are engaged in learning activities in the virtual classroom
using our online learning system as a guide and point of interaction. Learning activities include extensive
reading, video viewing, research projects, worksheets, quizzes, and online discussions. Students need to be
self-directed, self-motivated and have good time management skills in order to be successful in this low-
residency program. Most students spend about 40 hours a week engaged in these learning activities when
not physically at the Bastyr campus.
Program-related computer, software and Internet connection costs are the students’ responsibility.
Additionally, students who live outside the Puget Sound region will also incur travel and lodging expenses
associated with the mandatory onsite attendance at the Bastyr University campus in Kenmore, Washington.
