How do you decide who is accepted?
Applicants must meet the prerequisites and complete the application process described application packet. The Admissions Committee evaluates applicants according to their previous education, completion of prerequisites, personal essay, letters of recommendation, life experience, and a personal interview. Is admission to the program competitive?
Yes. We accept 18 students each year, and we receive many more applications each year than there is space available.

Do I need a high school diploma to apply?
Either a high school diploma or GED/ high school equivalent is required to apply.

Must I complete all prerequisites before enrolling?
Yes, you MUST complete all prerequisites before starting the program.

You can apply even if you have several other prerequisites outstanding. However, in your application you must provide a detailed plan of how you plan to complete them before you begin coursework in the midwifery program. For example, tell us what school, quarter and course you will be taking to fulfill the outstanding prerequisite.

You will not be allowed to start the program in fall unless you have finished all prerequisites and sent the documentation to us.

Will "such and such" course meet the prerequisite?
First, be sure to check the list of prerequisites. All academic prerequisites must be completed at the community college or university level for college credit (not continuing education). Generally, courses that do not transfer to a four-year university will not meet our guidelines for prerequisites (e.g. massage school credits, medical assistant coursework or other non-college level training or education).

If you have questions about a specific course please contact the admissions specialist and provide the following information: title of course, description of course, syllabus of course (if available), number of credits, and name of school.

What are your policies regarding students with disabilities?
SMS welcomes applicants with disabilities. Such applicants will have an opportunity to discuss the impact that their limitations may have on both their ability to successfully complete the Midwifery Education Program at SMS and their ability to practice midwifery after graduation.

The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) is designed to protect persons with disabilities from discrimination. It recommends that the essential functions necessary for performing the proposed job or schooling be fully described so that the candidate can determine if he or she can perform these functions. Please review this list of essential functions and expect to be questioned during the admissions interview regarding your ability to fulfill these functions.

The ADA allows employers, schools or adjunct clinical faculty to ask if applicants can perform these essential functions. They can ask applicants to describe or demonstrate how they will perform an essential function. They can also test applicants for aptitude, physical agility, intelligence and specific skills.

Seattle Midwifery School staff is available to help applicants, students and preceptors propose reasonable accommodations for those with disabilities. Questions regarding such accommodations should be directed to the Admissions Specialist.

Do you have an open house?
We have an open house on the first Tuesday of each month. We encourage prospective Midwifery Program students and those interested in our Doula and Extension Education Program to attend. Representatives of each program will talk with you and answer your questions. In addition, we have a panel of experienced doulas and childbirth professionals and a student midwife who will be happy to talk about their experiences. If you would like to attend an open house, please send email to RSVP.

Can I set up an appointment to meet with the admissions specialist?
Yes, please feel free to contact the admissions specialist and set up a time to meet. You can also call or email questions. The admissions specialist can review the prerequisites with you and answer your questions about the midwifery program.

What can I do to improve my application?

  1. Complete your application correctly by following all directions carefully and submitting proper documentation and fees on time
  2. Your application should be professional in appearance and well organized. Proofread your essay several times and make sure it is free from spelling and grammatical errors. Ask a friend to read it and give you feedback.
  3. Choose references who will write interesting letters of recommendation that highlight your skills and describe what makes you unique.
  4. Make sure you address all the questions asked in the personal letter or we will ask you to re-write it before we consider your application.
  5. Start sending official transcripts and documents early so we can review them alongside the rest of your application material.
  6. Stay in touch with the admissions specialist and let her know you are sending in an application.
  7. Consider extra touches such as including your resume.
  8. Think like an admissions office: Does your application stand out as special? Does it give a good sense of who you are and why you want to be a midwife? Is it neat in appearance and did you follow the directions? Have you presented yourself as someone we would be excited about interviewing?
