What kind of degree or certificate will I receive when I graduate?
Upon successful completion of the program, Seattle Midwifery School will grant you a Certificate of Midwifery. However, in order to practice in most states, you will either need to take the NARM exam and become a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) or the state board exam to receive a license, certificate or registration in your state.

Will my graduating from SMS allow me to practice in my state or province?
The answer depends on where you decide to practice.
For the US, a good way to check the laws in the state in which you plan to practice is to visit the Citizens for Midwifery web site and click "State by State." There you will find information about the legal status of the midwifery profession in each state.
Canadian students are eligible to apply for registration through the the new Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Pilot (MMBP), “a 7 month pilot project that will help internationally-educated midwives learn how to apply their skills in a Canadian context.” This bridging program has replaced the PLEA process to become a registered midwife for those with a non-Canadian midwifery education.
