Mission and Model

Mission

To educate and inspire leaders in midwifery.

Vision

We strive for a world where every family has access to care, education and options, contributing to a safe and joyous pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

We envision:

  • recognition of the Department of Midwifery at Bastyr University as the foremost educational institu-tion for midwives;

  • skilled graduates with thriving practices and varied professional opportunities;

  • An increased number of consumers choosing doulas and direct entry midwives;

  • Heightened community awareness of birth choices with midwifery recognized as a safe, viable option; and

  • Enhanced collaboration with women’s health organizations.

A Foundation Built on The Midwives Model of Care ™

The Midwives Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes.

The Midwives Model of Care includes:

  • monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle;

  • providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and de-livery, and postpartum support;

  • minimizing technological interventions; and

  • identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention.

The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma and cesarean section.
