Midwifery Education Program Overview
SMS has adopted a competency-based model for education that values cultural differences and ensures that classroom and clinical experiences build toward the achievement of the core competencies necessary for entry into the profession of midwifery.
The program is three years (11 quarters) for students attending full time or up to four to five years (approximately 17 quarters) for students attending part time. Graduates from the program earn a Certificate in Midwifery and are eligible to sit for an examination to become licensed as a midwife in Washington or other states or provinces and to become nationally certified as a Certified Professional Midwife.
SMS education includes a combination of monthly (one- to five-day) onsite classroom intensives in Seattle, ongoing clinical practice with clinicians, regular online interaction with classmates and faculty, and a substantial amount of independent study.
