Educational Principles
Bastyr University’s Department of Midwifery is dedicated to providing quality education in the field of women’s health care. Toward that end:
- We expect all members of the school community to work together in a spirit of inquisitiveness, support, and tolerance to create a positive learning environment that emphasizes mutual respect and supports the personal and professional growth of all.
- We believe that, in order to best serve the needs of all childbearing women, women’s health care providers should reflect the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of our country. Thus, we encourage the enrollment of students representing this diversity.
- We prepare students for the challenge of becoming professionals in an ever-changing and demanding health care arena by fostering life-long skills in professional leadership, critical thinking, literature research, public education, and self-motivated study.
- We strive to use a variety of teaching methods and learning resources to meet unique learning needs of each individual.
- We believe that learning is enhanced when students actively participate in all aspects of education -- including learning and teaching.
- We work to expose students to a variety of perspectives and experience and to foster critical thinking skills. Faculty are qualified in their fields, come from diverse backgrounds, and are willing to acknowledge and discuss opinions, styles, and practices other than their own.
- We train midwives, doulas, and others to recognize that clients have the right to make choices for themselves and to provide clients with accurate information and appropriate support for their decisions.
