Myers Midwifery Scholarship Fund
From the wellspring of 1970’s grassroots activism Seattle Midwifery School was born and from the moment of its birth it has been guided and nurtured by some amazing women. These women brought and continue to bring their unique talents to the cause of educating and inspiring leaders in the midwifery profession. At this time the leadership of SMS is pleased to announce the creation of a scholarship fund to honor two of these pioneering women. (How very fortunate for us that Suzy Myers and Jo Anne Myers-Ciecko share a last name!)
The Myers Midwifery Scholarship Fund will be used to help fund midwifery education for deserving students through tuition assistance. The eligibility criteria are still being determined but clearly need, merit, and a plan to serve underserved communities will be a part of those criteria.
Negotiations with Bastyr University continue to move forward and we are awaiting approval from regional accreditors to join our organizations and give us permission to confer a graduate degree in midwifery. With the approvals from accreditation, Bastyr has assured us that scholarship funds will be restricted for the use of supporting tuition for qualified midwifery students. This university-based, regionally accredited direct-entry midwifery degree in the United States will be one of the first in the United States and it will be a more expensive program than the current certificate program at SMS. Although the joining of our two organizations will provide additional opportunities for students to receive increased financial aid, the timing of this scholarship is critical so that access to midwifery education is viable for all students. Our goal is to ensure that this fund becomes an annual giving opportunity for our community thereby allowing us to continue to educate the midwives from a more diverse community to be the highest caliber care providers to serve a greater number of deserving familie.
Very soon we will also announce another named scholarship fund created to support the education of doulas, childbirth educators and breastfeeding and lactation consultants.
Please help us honor these two amazing women and continue their legacy by contributing to the Myers Midwifery Scholarship Fund. Join us as we move into the next great phase of midwifery education!
