Board of DirectorsBre Holt, MPH (Chair) is a program assistant for the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington. She holds a BA from Swarthmore College and an MPH with a focus in International Health from Boston University. She has volunteered with the Greater Philadelphia Women's Medical Fund, San Francisco Women Against Rape, and Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Washington. Her first daughter was born at home in May 2005. Christine Riedy, PhD (Vice Chair) is a faculty member in the Department of Dental Public Health Sciences at the University of Washington's School of Dentistry. Her research interests include public health issues related to childhood illness and diseases, such as early childhood caries and nutritional issues, understanding cultural diversity in disease states, and qualitative methodology. Christine holds a PhD in psychology and an MPH in health services (maternal child track), both from the University of Washington. She and her husband have one daughter. Jonathan Tuttle (Treasurer) is a consumer of midwifery care (his daughter was born at home in December 2005). Jon earned Masters of Business Administration degrees concurrently from Columbia University and University of California at Berkeley in 2005 while working full time at Microsoft, where he is a Senior Finance Manager in the Entertainment and Devices division. Jen Costigan (Secretary) is a certified birth doula and a Montessori teacher working with children under three years old. She holds Association Montessori Internationale certification at the 0-3 and 6-12 year old levels and an MEd from Loyola College. After completing her BA in Art and Women’s Studies at St. Olaf College she and her husband volunteered with the Peace Corps in Papua New Guinea. A far cry from their tiny house on stilts in the rainforest, she now lives in Fremont with husband, Paul and son, Will (born at home in 2004). Tizita Assefa-Hatcher (bio pending) Joanna Bargeron, MPA is the mother of two children and formerly served as Development Director for SMS. She served in the Peace Corps in The Gambia, West Africa and completed a masters degree in public administration before getting involved in maternity care issues. Wendy Hughes CPM, LDM, is a recent graduate from the SMS Midwifery Program and a proud recipient of the Jo Anne Myers-Ciecko Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Leadership. She lives and practices in Portland, OR. In addition to her work on the SMS Board, Wendy continues to remain active at SMS as a teaching assistant and tutor for upcoming midwifery students. Wendy is also a member of the MANA Division of Research. Prior to pursuing midwifery, Wendy worked in the corporate world as an engineer, a recruiter, and a human resources manager. Suzy Myers, LM, CPM, MPH is a practicing midwife and co-founder of the Seattle Midwifery School. In addition to serving on the Board, she is a member of the faculty and a clinical preceptor. She and her midwifery partner, Marge Mansfield, provide care in their clinical practice, Seattle Home Maternity Service and Childbirth Center and have assisted nearly 2000 families since 1976. In 1983 Suzy helped to launch the Midwives' Association of Washington State, and served as its first president from 1983-1985. In 1988 she earned a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Washington. Silje Sodal, MPH is a doula and a graduate from the maternal and child health division of the University of Washington’s School of Public Health. Previously she served as executive director of the Colorado’s Women's Health Campaign, a statewide campaign to raise awareness of disease prevention and health promotion for Colorado women, and as project manager for the Workforce Coordinating Council, an advisory body to the Governor and legislature on employment and training issues in the state of Colorado. She holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado, and has participated in volunteer activities for Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Seattle, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, and Children’s Hospital in Denver. |
